A Guide to Ericaceous Plants

There’s a simple secret to growing some of our favourite garden plants: give them the right soil.

Plants such as heathers, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias are known as ericaceous plants, meaning they thrive in acidic, lime-free soil.

Understanding which plants need acidic conditions can help you choose the right plants for your garden and give them the best possible start.

What Does Ericaceous Mean?

Ericaceous simply means that a plant prefers acidic soil with a low pH.

These plants can struggle in alkaline or chalky soils, where they may have difficulty taking up essential nutrients, often resulting in yellowing leaves and poor growth.

Which Plants Are Ericaceous?

There are plenty of plants that enjoy acidic conditions, including:

  • Heathers (Erica) – compact, colourful and perfect for adding year-round interest.
  • Rhododendrons & Azaleas – known for their spectacular spring flowers.
  • Camellias – beautiful evergreen shrubs with elegant blooms.
  • Pieris – attractive evergreen foliage with delicate spring flowers.
  • Blueberries & Cranberries – a great choice for combining ornamental planting with something edible.
  • Leucothoe – evergreen foliage that adds colour and texture to borders and containers.
  • Conifers – a useful choice for adding evergreen structure and year-round interest.
  • Acers – valued for their attractive foliage and vibrant seasonal colour.

Give Them The Right Start

If your garden soil isn’t naturally acidic, you can still grow ericaceous plants successfully in containers filled with ericaceous compost.

Keep plants well watered, particularly during dry spells, and add a suitable mulch to help retain moisture and keep roots cool. Regular feeding with an ericaceous plant food can also help keep your plants healthy and looking their best.

Create An Ericaceous Display

Heathers look fantastic planted alongside other acid-loving plants, creating a colourful and varied display with different textures, foliage and flowers.

Try combining heathers, pieris and leucothoe for a display full of contrasting foliage, or add blueberries for something both ornamental and edible.

Whether you’re filling a border, planting containers or creating a dedicated area, grouping plants with similar soil requirements can make caring for them much easier.
