Blooming Beautiful

A Simple Guide to Growing Healthy Roses

There’s something timeless about roses. Whether climbing over an archway or brightening up a border, they bring colour, scent and structure to any garden. And while they may have a reputation for being a little fussy, a well-cared-for rose is surprisingly resilient.

With the right conditions and a little regular attention, your roses will reward you with strong growth, beautiful blooms, and fewer problems with pests and diseases.

Here’s our top tips for caring for your rose.

Location, Location, Location

Like many garden plants, roses thrive when they’re given the environment they love. An open, sunny spot is ideal, roses need plenty of light to flower well and stay healthy.

Good soil makes all the difference too. Aim for something fertile, moist but free-draining. If your soil is heavy or sandy, improving it with organic matter before planting will help create the perfect balance.

Healthy Roots Start Here

Roses are often described as ‘hungry’ plants, and it’s true, they benefit from regular feeding to keep them growing and flowering at their best.

When planting new roses, adding mycorrhizal fungi can make a real difference. These beneficial fungi help the plant’s roots absorb water and nutrients more effectively, giving them a strong start.

In early spring, apply a slow-release fertiliser to support the season’s growth. As summer arrives and your roses begin to bloom, switching to a liquid feed, such as seaweed or tomato fertiliser, can encourage more flowers and prolong the display.

Water Wisely

Watering is simple, but how you do it matters. Always aim to water at the base of the plant rather than over the leaves. This helps prevent fungal diseases such as black spot, which thrive in damp conditions.

In dry weather, creating a shallow dip around the base of the plant can help direct water to the roots where it’s needed most. A good soak every so often is far more beneficial than little and often.

A Little Regular Care

Small, regular jobs can make a big difference to the overall health of your roses.

Deadheading, removing spent blooms, not only keeps plants looking tidy but also encourages more flowers to form. It’s a simple task that can be done as you pass by, secateurs in hand.

It’s also worth keeping the area around your roses clear. Fallen leaves and petals can harbour pests and diseases, so a quick tidy now and then helps prevent problems before they start.

Healthy Roses, Happier Gardens

When roses are grown in the right place and given what they need, they’re far better equipped to cope with whatever the season brings.

A sunny spot, good soil, regular feeding and a little thoughtful care go a long way. In return, you’ll have strong, healthy plants that bring beauty and enjoyment to your garden year after year.
